This past week, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and industry leaders alike gathered for the 15th annual DiscoveryX conference, hosted by Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). The health section of the exhibition had impressive representation from the H2i community, with more than 15 ventures in booths, showcasing their ventures to attendees! Featured ventures included: Able Innovations, Blue Ocean Technologies, Cohesys, Cove Neurosciences, Elaya, HDAX Therapeutics, Hypercare, Mesosil, My Well Self, NerveX Neurotechnologies, Neuropeutics, Pearl Interactives, SilicoLabs, Synakis, ToothPod, and Vibraint.

The International Conference on Aging Innovation and Rehabilitation (ICAIR) is taking place May 6th and 7th and will welcome academics, clinicians, scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators working in the health care and age tech sectors. As part of the conference, the Power Play Pitch Competition will take place and award $50,000 in total prizes. H2i is thrilled to congratulate five ventures from the H2i community who were named as finalists and presenters. In the Innovative Start-Up category, Cove Neurosciences, pitched by Nardin Samuel, and AiimSense Inc., pitched by Atefeh (Ati) Zarabadi, will present on event-day and compete to win. In the Innovative Concept category, NeuRestore Technologies, pitched by Jasmine Al-Sayegh, Helixir Medical, pitched by Moses Cook, and Panorama Health Inc., pitched by Ruilin Wu, will be taking the stage to compete.

The Alberta Government has announced the ventures selected to be a part of the second Innovation Catalyst Grant Cohort. The initiative is part of the government’s $20 million investment in grant programming to support the innovation of new technologies. H2i extends a big congratulations to H2i venture Brain Care Technologies, who was selected to be a part of the prestigious cohort and receive two years of funding support! Brain Care Technologies is working on the early detection and monitoring of cognitive health, including mild cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s disease.  

Of the accomplishment, founder Greg McGillis shared: “We are pleased to announce that Brain Care Technologies (BCT) has won a Government of Alberta Innovation Catalyst Grant (ICG). The ICG significantly supports the achievement of our mission — empowering individuals to improve their cognitive health through early detection and monitoring of dementia so they can age well. This award expedites the hiring of additional staff, expansion of our collaboration with stakeholders and partners, and advancement of the development of our intellectual property to enable us to fulfill our commercialization objectives.”

Congratulations to H2i company Sparked, who was recently selected as a Top 12 in the Enactus Canada National Student Entrepreneur Competition! Selected from a competitive pool of 220 nominees, Sparked was recognized as representing the top student-entrepreneur talent in the country. Sparked is innovating for individuals with heart disease symptoms, family history of heart disease, or an interest in home health monitoring. The company offers a handheld device that screens for risk of heart disease using a saliva sample.

Founder Stephanie Buryk shared of the recent win, “We are proud to be supported by Enactus. Not only are they shaping the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders, but they are doing so with the mission of building a better Canada. These efforts are deeply aligned with the values that drive our company, Sparked, every day.”
