AbbVie and SpinUp recently launched the AbbVie Biotech Innovators Award at SpinUp to foster innovation and support growth in Canada’s world class life sciences sector, leading to accelerated delivery of life-changing innovations to patients.
One Canadian early-stage biotech startup will be awarded with:
- FREE wet lab space at SpinUp for one year
- No-strings-attached business and scientific mentorship by AbbVie
- Free access to SpinUp’s core equipment, entrepreneurship programming, and support in connecting with research talent at U of T

Applications due: January 17, 2025.
Shortlisted candidates notified: March 2025
Shortlisted candidate pitch competition to select winner: May 2025.
The award is intended for early-stage Canadian biotech startups that fit the following criteria:
Focused on science / technology with potential to generate transformational therapies in areas that align strategically with AbbVie’s therapeutic areas of interest (Immunology, Oncology, Neuroscience, Eye Care)
Developing therapeutic platform technologies, including gene therapy, novel cell therapy, gene editing, novel drug-discovery or platform technologies
Exclusions: Diagnostics, Devices, Research Tools, and Healthcare Services/IT
