L2M Health Innovation Seminar | The Physician Entrepreneur: How Doctors Can Drive Innovation
Join the Lab2Market National Health Hub for the second session of their Innovation Seminar series!

What roles can physicians take on in health innovation? What are current attitudes towards physician entrepreneurship? What incentives and disincentives influence physicians considering entrepreneurship? How can physicians balance clinical duties, academic advancement and entrepreneurial endeavors? What first steps can be taken?
In this session, we will examine the physician entrepreneur with special guest Dr. Kamran Khan. Dr. Khan is an infectious disease clinician, researcher and academic. He is also Founder and CEO of BlueDot, a successful biothreat intelligence startup. After more than a decade of being a physician entrepreneur, Dr. Khan is investigating how we can better understand, engage and support physicians interested in health innovation, as a Temerty Health Nexus Chair in Health Innovation and Technology.
Drawing insight from his career and learnings to-date, Dr. Khan will lead an exploration and discussion of the ways that physicians can engage in entrepreneurship, how to balance benefits and risks, current perceptions in the field, how to get started and how we can better connect physicians to the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The seminar will include both a moderated discussion and an interactive Q&A. This session is open to all – bring your questions and join in the conversation!
Dr. Kamran Khan is an infectious disease physician and scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Motivated by his experiences during the 2003 Toronto SARS epidemic, Dr. Khan has been conducting research on global epidemics for over two decades, publishing landmark studies in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, Science and Nature.
To translate and disseminate scientific knowledge into timely action during public health emergencies, Dr. Khan founded BlueDot, a global infectious disease intelligence company that helps governments and multinational enterprises strengthen their readiness and resilience to emerging biological threats. BlueDot’s work has been featured in global forums from CNN to BBC World and has been featured twice on CBS’ 60 Minutes, most recently in their April 2025 segment on H5N1. Dr. Khan received a Governor General’s Award for his work transcending clinical medicine, public health, big data, and artificial intelligence and was recently elected as a Fellow to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2021 he was appointed as an inaugural Temerty Health Nexus Chair in Innovation and Technology at the University of Toronto.
