Meet the Speakers

Marc Shewchun is a partner in the firm’s Emerging Technology Group with over 20 years of experience acting for private and public technology companies. A seasoned legal advisor and business executive, Marc brings a deep knowledge of the evolving startup ecosystem to help clients achieve their business objectives. 

Marc draws from managerial and operational experience in finance, facilities, customer support and community management in understanding current business challenges and anticipating those to come. His results-oriented approach to navigating corporate transactions, commercial partnerships, litigation mandates, as well as regulatory compliance and intellectual property matters, is sought by technology sector clients at all critical stages of development. 

Prior to joining Fasken, Marc was the founder of a program dedicated to providing high quality legal services to early stage ventures in the Canadian startup community. 

Dr. Michael Floros is a dedicated entrepreneur and innovator, focusing on developing novel solutions within the healthcare field. As the founder of Cohesys, Dr. Floros leads the development and commercialization of the company’s flagship product, BoneTape, a medical device designed for improving fracture treatment. After obtaining his PhD in materials science from Trent University, Michael worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto before founding Cohesys. He has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications and is an inventor on 14 patents. 

Richard Brooks is the managing partner of Brooks Business Lawyers, a boutique business law firm located in Toronto, Canada which he founded in 1999 and which services the needs of Canadian businesses and their stakeholders. Richard’s practice is focused exclusively on business law including: mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate finance, entrepreneurial services, commercial real estate, information technology and corporate strategy.  Richard’s firm has been working with founders and start-ups for 25 years and has had the opportunity to work with some of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs in all stages of their businesses.  Prior to founding Brooks Business Lawyers, Richard practiced international law in the Toronto office of Baker & McKenzie. 
   
Richard is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor and has served on numerous boards for non-profits and other charities.  Richard was the co-founder of NetraMark Corp., an AI company that developed proprietary algorithms for the pharmaceutical sector.  At its outset, NetraMark was a cohort in Creative Destruction Labs’s AI stream.  NetraMark was subsequently acquired in 2021 by a public company.   
 
Richard received his Bachelor of Arts from York University in 1989 and his law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1993.
